Preproduction:
Preproduction! Preproduction! Preproduction!
If you come to Test Tube to record, I'm not going to just set up some mics and hit record. ( Unless of course this is ALL YOU WANT ) Anybody ( and most musicians do ) can record these days. All you need these days is basically a mic, preamp, a/d converter, computer, and some speakers! The difference with coming here is obviously a lot more gear, but most importantly the attention that your music will get even before any blinking red lights.
These are some things that I find very important:

1. Shows.
What better way to hear / see what your band is trying to convey to your audience? I always record the shows that I go to for your reference and mine. No more " Your cd sounds great, but I think you guys really come across better live. "

2. Rehearsals.
This is when we get to play with song structures, dynamics, styles, even amp/ pedal settings. This is when I will document tempos, time signatures, keys etc. Getting this out of the way now will make the studio time a lot more fun and efficient.

3. Homework.
You want your band to be tight? This usually takes lots of practice. Drummers: If you don't have a metronome...get one! And if you have one and can't play along with it, play with until you can! That one groove was not very tight, play it at half of the tempo, and slowly speed it up until you've got it down.
That's you're homework, and it's due monday morning.

Production:
It is impossible to know what your song sounds like from an outside opinion! I don't keep stuff that doesn't sound good. This doesn't mean that everything needs to be perfect, in fact I believe it's the imperfections that make songs sound real! So....Imperfections=good, mistakes=bad. ( I just made that up )

Postproduction:
i.e. mixing and mastering.
I want your input on the mix. Usually I will go through a few mixes after revisions from you and I until we get the one.
As for mastering, I strongly reccomend finding a mastering engineer for your project. However, for tight budgets, I will get your premaster sounding up to par with what is in your cd wallet or iPod.
