Yamaha mixing desk - AI - PC and back?

Hi all, here are my questions....

I have a Yamaha 16 channel analogue desk that I curently send a stereo pair to my computer, this works ok, but....

I want to buy a Firewire Audio Interface, connect it to the insert points on my desk and send at least 8 channels via Firewire to my PC and then using the same insert jacks on the desk, to the outs on the Audio Interface to mix, using the desk.

1) is this physically possible? I have spoken to Yamaha and they say it is!

2) which Interface would be the best option? This would be mostly for mic'ing up my drums, 8 mics and gates

3) is it possible for this to work with Y cables? single end to insert point on desk and one to the in and out on the Audio Interface... sorry but if it takes the pain out of repatching, alls good lol

4) if the above does work, anyone got a wiring diagram to actually make the cables up?

Since the insert points on a mixer are right after the mic pre and the returning signal still runs the full channel (eqs, auxs, pans, etc), yes that is possible. As for an interface, since you need inputs only, look into the Echo AudioFire 12.

Great sounding converters, 12 line ins and outs on the back and LED metering up front. Great stable drivers. 24bit/96k. I have been using Echo converters for ten years now, and they don't miss a beat. They will work with every native daw out there (I am using mine with Presonus Studio One). Simple and straight forward. The biggest thing will be to figure out if the inserts are running at -10 consumer or +4 professional out/in, so you can set the echo ins/outs to run at that same compatible level.

Let me know what other questions you might have on this.

Are you doing this live or in a home studio environment?

And are the gates hardware pieces that you want to record into the computer as part of the files?

Hya, thanks for the feedback! I will be looking into Echo audiofire for def!
As for the gates, I want a hardware device that will gate each mic on the drum kit, to reduce overspill, I know this will have to be put before the AI and I'm going to need something with 8 channels.

any ideas?????
